My grandfather.

On this Memorial Day weekend, I think about my Dziadziu (that’s Polish for grandfather). He’s the guy 2nd from the left in the grainy photo above. He was a sergeant in the anti-tank division of the Polish Army during WWII. After the war, he and his family reunited and eventually migrated to the United States, settling down in northern New Jersey where he built a life for his family and generations to come.

I remember some of the stories he told me as a child…. and now that I reflect on them, I realize that this guy had demonstrated extreme bravery and resilience in facing horrors, and then again in new challenges as he immigrated to the United States. I also remember that he had a wicked sense of humor about everything and was (and still is) one of my favorite people and personal hero.

He provides me with a good lesson and attitude on life…. Have the resilience to meet the changes life throws at you, have the bravery to meet new ones (like launching your own business! Gasp!), and have a sense of humor along the way. Whenever I feel sorry for myself, I realize that I have it pretty darn good in comparison to what his generation faced.

To those who have served and are serving, thank you for your service.

Dziadziu provides us with a good reminder and attitude to go forward in life… Be brave, be resilient, have a sense of fun and sprinkle in some kindness along the way.
